Course
The Oberelbe-Marathon course
The VVO Oberelbe-Marathon runs downstream along the Elbe cycle path from Saxon Switzerland into Dresden, and every distance finishes in the Heinz-Steyer-Stadion. The marathon starts at 9:20 on the Elbwiese below the station in Königstein, passes the sandstone cliffs of the Elbsandsteingebirge in the first 15 km and loops through the old town of Pirna.

From there it follows the river past the Blaues Wunder bridge and the Eckberg, Albrechtsberg and Lingnerschloss palaces, with a view of the Frauenkirche shortly before the finish. The half marathon starts in Pirna and joins the same route after 0.5 km, while the 10 km starts at the SchillerGarten below the Blaues Wunder and the 5 km below the Waldschlößchenbrücke. The marathon time limit is 6 hours, and 2027 is the 28th edition.

- Weather on race day
- Ten years of late April weather data for Dresden show average highs near 15 °C and lows near 5 °C, with about 8 °C at 8 am. That is close to ideal running weather, but rain falls on roughly three days in ten in this window. A light layer for the shuttle and start area, plus a plan for steady fluids as the day warms, covers most years.
What to train for
Most of this race is on a riverside cycle path, so the work is steady, even pacing over long stretches with few landmarks to break them up.
Build marathon-pace segments into your long runs (for example 3 x 5 km at goal pace inside a 28 to 32 km run) to rehearse holding rhythm alone.
The Pirna loop and town streets add some turns, so practise smooth cornering at pace. With a late April date, your peak weeks fall in March and early April, when cool weather makes strong long runs easier to complete.
