The Berlin Marathon course

The fastest marathon course in the world, and the one where most recent world records have been set. Wide, flat Berlin boulevards, few sharp turns, and a finish through the Brandenburg Gate. Entry is by lottery. If you are chasing a time and can only run one Major, this is the one the course itself argues for.

Weather on race day

Late September in Berlin is usually excellent for racing: starts in the 50s, highs in the 60s, often overcast. The consistency of the weather is part of why the records happen here.

What to train for

Threshold and goal-pace work, because nothing else about this course will limit you. A flat, fast, cool-weather race is a direct read on your aerobic fitness, so build the long runs with substantial marathon-pace blocks and get the fuelling exact.
