    Course

    The Cologne Marathon course

The marathon starts on Ottoplatz in Deutz and crosses the Deutzer Brücke in the first kilometre with a postcard view of the cathedral and the old town. It then runs south past the Chocolate Museum and the Kranhäuser on the Rheinauhafen to Bayenthal and Rodenkirchen, back through the Südstadt and the Severinstorburg, and out west through Sülz, Lindenthal and the Aachener Weiher.

Rudolfplatz comes three times (around 14.5, 24 and 40 km), and the stretch up the Hohenzollernring to Friesenplatz is a wall of noise the organisers compare to Alpe d'Huez; Ehrenfeld and Nippes follow before the run-in through Neumarkt and the Hohe Straße to the finish on Komödienstraße beside the cathedral. The organisers describe it as flat and fast, all on city streets.

    Weather on race day
Early October in Cologne usually means a start around 8–15 °C, with average afternoon highs near 15 °C, which is close to ideal for marathon pace. Showers and a fresh breeze are possible, so plan a light layer and practise drinking on the move at the stations.

    What to train for

Flat city streets and huge crowds make it easy to go out too fast, especially on the first pass of Rudolfplatz at 14.5 km, so rehearse even splits in long runs with 20–25 km at marathon pace.

The Ehrenfeld and Nippes section from 27 to 37 km is where the race is decided: put your longest goal-pace blocks late in your long runs.

Summer training feeds an October race, so get long runs done early in the morning and save your hardest sessions for September's cooler days.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Cologne Marathon

Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.

    Cologne Marathon training questions

How long should I train for the Cologne Marathon?

Most runners give a marathon sixteen to twenty weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.

Flat. The marathon starts on Ottoplatz in Deutz and crosses the Deutzer Brücke in the first kilometre with a postcard view of the cathedral and the old town.

What is the weather usually like at the Cologne Marathon?

When should I start tapering for the Cologne Marathon?
