Course
The Hamburg Marathon course
The marathon starts and finishes on Karolinenstraße at the Hamburg Messe. The first kilometres run down the Reeperbahn past the Dancing Towers, then out along the Elbchaussee with views of the harbour, back past the fish market, the Landungsbrücken, the Elbphilharmonie, HafenCity and the brick warehouses of the Speicherstadt.

After the Wallring tunnel the route crosses the city centre via Jungfernstieg and the Kennedybrücke, follows the eastern shore of the Außenalster, then heads north past the Stadtpark and City Nord to the turning point in Ohlsdorf, from where the last 12 km lead home through Eppendorf, Harvestehuder Weg and Dammtor. The organisers call it almost flat as a pancake, with only small ramps, and the course record is 2:03:46. Crowds are huge and loud almost the whole way.

- Weather on race day
- Late April in Hamburg usually means a morning start around 7–13 °C, with average afternoon highs near 14 °C. Wind off the Elbe and the Alster and passing showers are common, so tuck in behind other runners on the exposed stretches and dress for a cool, possibly damp start.
What to train for
A fast, flat course means the marathon is decided by how well you hold pace after 30 km, so build long runs of 30–35 km with the final 10–15 km at goal pace.
The northern turn at Ohlsdorf leaves 12 km to go: rehearse a strong final hour by finishing long runs with a progression.
GPS drifts in the Wallring tunnel and between tall buildings, so learn your goal pace by feel and use the kilometre markers.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Hamburg Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 25, 2027, your taper starts around April 7, 2027.

What is the weather usually like at the Hamburg Marathon?

When should I start tapering for the Hamburg Marathon?
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 25, 2027, your taper starts around April 7, 2027.
