In between it is a sightseeing tour across the city: west to Ernst-Reuter-Platz and Charlottenburg Palace, along the Kurfürstendamm past the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, then east through Potsdamer Platz, Leipziger Straße and the Gendarmenmarkt toward Karl-Marx-Allee, before returning past the Rotes Rathaus, Museum Island and down Unter den Linden. The course is flat and fast on wide asphalt boulevards, with about 40 bands and cheer points along the way. In 2026 a German record of 59:22 fell here, which tells you how quick the roads are.

    Weather on race day
Early April in Berlin is usually cool for racing: a morning start often sits around 5–12 °C, with average afternoon highs near 15 °C. It can be cold and bright (2026 was cold but sunny) or showery and breezy, so bring a throwaway layer and gloves for the start pen.

    What to train for

Flat roads and a big field reward a relaxed first 5 km and an even effort, so practise starting at goal pace rather than faster in your tempo runs.

Build around one threshold session a week, such as 3 × 15 minutes at half marathon pace, plus a long run of 16–20 km.

The race is in early April, so much of your training falls in winter: plan your key sessions for daylight hours and do strides when your legs feel stiff from the cold.

    Taper

Tapering for the Berlin Half Marathon

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 4, 2027, your taper starts around March 23, 2027.
