Course
The Bonn Marathon course
The races start at the Koblenzer Tor on Belderberg and finish at the Altes Rathaus on Bonn's market square. In recent editions the route crossed the Kennedybrücke to Beuel on the right bank of the Rhine and back, then followed the river to the Rheinaue, turned on Ludwig-Erhard-Allee and ran past the Post Tower, the Museumsmeile and the Museum Koenig before heading back past the university toward the old town; the marathon covers the city on two laps.

The 10 km, half and marathon courses are measured by a licensed WA-AIMS/DLV measurer, and the terrain is flat apart from the bridge ramps. The 2027 course map will be published later, so check the details once it is out. A distinctive feature: in 2026 the marathon started at 11:00, after the half marathon waves, so you race the later part of the day.

- Distances
- 10K, Half marathon, Marathon
- Field
- 22,222 participants in 2026, sold out
- Weather on race day
- Mid-April in Bonn usually means 10–16 °C around the 11:00 marathon start, with average afternoon highs near 16 °C, and the later start means sun can warm the second half. Spring showers and wind on the Rhine bridges are both possible, so dress for the start but be ready to drink more than you would on a cold morning.
What to train for
With a late start, rehearse race-day timing: do a few long runs from late morning after a normal breakfast so you learn how to fuel before 11:00.
The flat course rewards steady pacing, so build long runs of 30–35 km with the final 10 km at goal pace.
Two laps through the same city streets mean you pass busy spectator zones twice, so practise holding your rhythm through a surge of crowd energy rather than speeding up.

Taper
Tapering for the Bonn Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 11, 2027, your taper starts around March 24, 2027.
