    Course

    The Leipzig Marathon course

Start and finish are on Am Sportforum beside the Red Bull Arena, and the marathon (10:00 start) runs two laps of the loop that the half covers once. Each lap is a sightseeing tour: the Neues Rathaus, Augustusplatz with the Gewandhaus and the Oper, the Grassi Museum, out past the Völkerschlachtdenkmal, the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek, then the southern Auwald, Clara-Zetkin-Park and the Karl-Heine-Kanal.

The ground is flat river-plain city running, and the course is measured to DLV and AIMS rules and recognised as a Boston qualifier. The last stretch is an almost 800 m finishing straight on the Marschnerstraße, with the 43 m Seelenbinderturm telling you the line is close.

    Field
More than 14,000 runners across all races
    Weather on race day
Mid-April in Leipzig is usually 4–15 °C, so the 10:00 start is cool and the second lap often runs in milder air. Rain and wind are possible but rarely severe, so dress for the start temperature and drink to normal spring needs.

    What to train for

A two-lap marathon is a mental test as much as a physical one: the second lap passes the same landmarks while you are tired, so practise running the second half of long runs on familiar loops at goal pace.

Build long runs to 32–35 km and include progression runs where the last 10 km are slightly faster than marathon pace.

The halfway cut-off is 2:40, so first-timers aiming near the 6-hour limit should rehearse an even pace of about 7:30 per km for the first 21 km. The flat course is ideal for a negative split.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Leipzig Marathon

Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 18, 2027, your taper starts around March 31, 2027.

    Leipzig Marathon training questions

How long should I train for the Leipzig Marathon?

Most runners give a marathon sixteen to twenty weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.

Flat. Start and finish are on Am Sportforum beside the Red Bull Arena, and the marathon (10:00 start) runs two laps of the loop that the half covers once.

What is the weather usually like at the Leipzig Marathon?

Mid-April in Leipzig is usually 4–15 °C, so the 10:00 start is cool and the second lap often runs in milder air. Rain and wind are possible but rarely severe, so dress for the start temperature and drink to normal spring needs.

When should I start tapering for the Leipzig Marathon?

Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 18, 2027, your taper starts around March 31, 2027.
