The bike brings the rolling hills: the current Olympic course is 24 miles in two loops on Skunk Hollow and Spaulding Hill roads, County K, Reed Street and Dartford Road, with about 1,130 feet of climbing on the route file, while the 15-mile sprint course has about 720 feet. The run is a scenic route along the lake, 5K for the sprint and 10K for the Olympic. The sprint has three hours and the Olympic five, and the organizers adjusted the bike routes for construction in 2026, so check the course page in the final weeks.

- Race-day conditions
- Mid July in central Wisconsin usually brings about 60–65 °F at dawn and highs in the low 80s °F, often humid, with a chance of summer storms. Wetsuits are mandatory below 58 °F, legal up to 78 °F and allowed without awards from 78.1 to 83.9 °F, and warm July water can tip the call either way. Carry two bottles on the hilly Olympic bike.
What to train for
The bike decides this race, with real hills packed into each loop.
Ride 5 to 6 x 2 to 3 minutes uphill at threshold, plus long rides on rolling roads where you pace the second loop as strongly as the first.
Practice confident descending and shifting early before short, steep rises. Add weekly bricks into 20 to 30 minutes at race pace, and do some swims without a wetsuit in case the water is warm.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Green Lake Triathlon
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on July 18, 2027, your taper starts around July 9, 2027.
