Course
The IRONMAN Wisconsin course
The 2.4-mile swim is two clockwise laps of Lake Monona from a self-seeded rolling start, and you exit straight up the famous Helix, the spiral parking ramp of Monona Terrace, into T1. The 112-mile bike heads south and west out of Madison to two loops of Wisconsin farmland that are anything but flat, over climbs such as Old Sauk Pass, Timber Lane and Midtown Road where spectators cheer right beside you on the steepest pitches.

Verona's festival crowds greet you as you start the second loop, and the ride ends with one more climb up the Helix to the dismount line. The 26.2-mile run is two laps of downtown Madison: through Camp Randall Stadium, out along the UW Lakeshore Nature Reserve by University Bay and around the Capitol, on short hills that IRONMAN rates as hilly. You finish in the shadow of the State Capitol.

- Race-day conditions
- IRONMAN lists typical air temperatures of about 54 °F at the start rising to 82 °F, with highs of 78 to 86 °F in 2024–2026. Lake Monona averages about 75 °F (67–74 °F in recent years), close to the 76.1 °F wetsuit cutoff, so be ready to swim with or without one. Warm September afternoons on an exposed bike course make heat and fluid planning important.
What to train for
This is a strength course: the bike throws constant short, steep climbs at you and the run keeps rolling, so build hill strength, not just volume.
Ride long hilly routes with repeated 1 to 3 minute climbs held at steady power, and resist the urge to surge when the crowds lift you on the steepest pitches.
Practice gearing and seated climbing so your legs arrive fresh for the marathon, and include hilly long runs and weekly bricks. Because the water can land near the wetsuit cutoff, do some swims without a wetsuit.

Taper
Tapering for the IRONMAN Wisconsin
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is hilly, so keep one short hill session in the first taper week to keep the climbs familiar. With the race on September 12, 2027, your taper starts around August 25, 2027.
