    Course

    The Lake Mills Triathlon course

The Lake Mills Triathlon opens the seven-race Wisconsin Triathlon Series and is based at Sandy Beach Park on Rock Lake, with a 7:00 a.m. start and transition closing at 6:45. It is a sprint only: a 400 m swim in waves with colored caps, a 16-mile bike and a 5K run.

    Read the full course notes

The organizers call the course flat and fast, and the bike route map stays within roughly 100 feet of elevation from start to finish. The 5K run is flat as well, and everyone has three hours to finish. First-timers get a dedicated novice wave with extra space and a longer gap before the age groups, which makes this a friendly first triathlon.

    Race-day conditions
Early June in southern Wisconsin usually brings mornings in the mid 50s °F and afternoons in the mid to upper 70s, and lake water this early in the season can still be cool. Wetsuits are mandatory below 58 °F, legal up to 78 °F and allowed without awards from 78.1 to 83.9 °F, so plan to race in one. Bring a warm layer for transition setup before the 7:00 a.m. start.

    What to train for

A short, flat sprint rewards speed and clean transitions.

In the pool, do 8 x 50 m fast with 15 seconds rest to rehearse a hard start, and get at least two wetsuit swims in open water in May to practice sighting in cool water.

On the bike, ride 3 x 10 minutes at sprint effort in your aero position, since 16 flat miles favor steady power. Add a weekly brick of 30 minutes on the bike straight into 10 minutes at 5K pace, and rehearse your transition setup at home until it takes under a minute.

    Taper

Tapering for the Lake Mills Triathlon

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on June 6, 2027, your taper starts around May 28, 2027.
