    Course

The Fort Worth Triathlon II course

Everything starts and finishes at the Marine Creek public boat ramp off Northwest Loop 820 in north Fort Worth, with one transition area for all three races. The swim is in Marine Creek Reservoir, a calm man-made lake: 500 m for the Sprint and 1,500 m for the Olympic.

Sprint and Run-Bike-Run athletes ride 12.5 miles and Olympic athletes 25 miles, then run a 5K or 10K from the same transition; Run-Bike-Run racers open with a 1-mile run before the bike. Waves go off in order: Olympic at 7:30 a.m., Sprint at 8:00 a.m. and Run-Bike-Run at 8:05 a.m. The cutoffs are generous but real: 30 minutes for the Sprint swim, 60 minutes for the Olympic swim, the bike course closes at 10:45 a.m. and the whole course at noon.

    Formats
    Sprint, Olympic, Run-Bike-Run
    Race-day conditions
Playtri lists the water at typically 72–78 °F, with the official reading taken one hour before the start; under USA Triathlon rules wetsuits are permitted up to 78 °F and allowed but not award-eligible from 78.1 to 84 °F. Around early October, NOAA 1991–2020 normals for Fort Worth Meacham usually run from lows of about 60–62 °F to highs of about 82–84 °F, so it can be warm by the time Olympic athletes are on the run. Start drinking early on the bike and carry more fluid than a short race seems to need.

    What to train for

Open water without walls is the biggest adjustment, so get three or four open-water swims in, practice sighting every 6 to 8 strokes in the pool, and rehearse a swim without a wetsuit in case the reading lands above 78 °F.

Build race-pace bike blocks that match your distance (2 x 15 minutes for the Sprint, 3 x 20 minutes for the Olympic) and finish each with a 10 to 15 minute run off the bike.

Run-Bike-Run athletes should practice a relaxed opening mile, then a brick that ends with a 5K at goal pace. Set up your transition at home and walk through it twice so race morning feels familiar.
