    Tri Rock Triathlon distances

    • Sprint 0.1 mi swim, 10 mi bike, 3.1 mi run

    Course

    The Tri Rock Triathlon course

Everything is based at the J.E.R. Chilton YMCA at Rockwall, with the race starting at 7:00 a.m.

    Read the full course notes

The 150-yard swim is a snake swim in the YMCA's indoor pool: athletes line up by bib number, swim down one lane, duck under the lane rope and continue up the next until the distance is done. The 10-mile bike is two loops on Caruth Lane, North John King Boulevard, East Quail Run Road and Hays Lane, passing Caruth Lake. The 5K run leaves the YMCA along Caruth Lane and follows the shore of Caruth Lake, with two turnarounds, before returning to the finish beside the YMCA. The bike course closes at 9:45 a.m. and the whole course at 10:30 a.m., and athletes must be at least 13.

    Race-day conditions
With an indoor pool swim, water temperature and wetsuits are not a factor. Early August around Dallas is usually already near 80 °F at the 7:00 a.m. start and in the upper 80s to 90s °F by the time most athletes finish the run, with humid air and strong sun, so hydrate well the day before and keep the run effort steady.

    What to train for

This is a short, fast race, so train at intensity.

The swim is over in a few minutes: do pool sets of 6 to 8 x 50 yards hard with short rest, and practice ducking under lane ropes and pushing off quickly.

On the bike, ride 2 x 10 minutes at hard sprint effort, and do weekly bricks of 20 to 30 minutes on the bike straight into a 10 to 15 minute run. Do some of those runs in the morning heat so August conditions feel familiar.

    Tri Rock Triathlon training questions

How long should I train for the Tri Rock Triathlon?

Most athletes give a sprint triathlon eight to twelve weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The coach counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.

What is the Tri Rock Triathlon course like?

Everything is based at the J.E.R.

How cold is the water at the Tri Rock Triathlon?

With an indoor pool swim, water temperature and wetsuits are not a factor. Early August around Dallas is usually already near 80 °F at the 7:00 a.m. start and in the upper 80s to 90s °F by the time most athletes finish the run, with humid air and strong sun, so hydrate well the day before and keep the run effort steady.

When should I start tapering for the Tri Rock Triathlon?

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. With the race on August 1, 2027, your taper starts around July 23, 2027.
