Long Lake from Swim Beach and a seeded rolling start in small groups: 1,640 yards for the Olympic and 400 yards for the sprint. The Olympic bike is two loops (22.6 miles) on Blue Bluff Road, Decker Lake Road, Decker Lane, Lindell Lane, Bloor Road, the SH 130 service road and FM 973, while the sprint rides one 11.5-mile loop. The official route file shows about 1,330 feet of climbing for the Olympic ride, so expect steady rollers rather than long climbs. The run is about 6.1 miles for the Olympic and 3.1 miles for the sprint on the park's red route, with about 350 feet of gain on the longer course. The sprint starts at 8:00 a.m. and the Olympic at 8:20, and everyone has to be off the bike by 11:00.

- Race-day conditions
- The organizers list an average water temperature of about 69 °F, and wetsuits are legal at 78 °F and below, so plan to swim in one. Late March in Austin averages 57–79 °F over the day, so expect a cool swim start and warm conditions by the run, sometimes with gusty spring wind on the open bike roads. Bring a layer for transition setup and carry two bottles on the bike.
What to train for
The bike sets up the day: ride 2 to 3 x 15 minutes at Olympic effort on rolling roads, holding steady power over each rise instead of surging, and pace the two loops so the second is as strong as the first.
Get a few open-water swims in your wetsuit in March, practicing sighting and a quick entry from a rolling start.
Add weekly bricks of 45 to 60 minutes on the bike straight into 15 to 20 minutes at 10K pace on hilly ground, since the run has rollers of its own. Know your 100-yard swim pace, because the start is seeded by it.

Taper
Tapering for the Cal Tri Austin
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on March 28, 2027, your taper starts around March 19, 2027.
