    • Sprint 0.2 mi swim, 11.5 mi bike, 3.1 mi run

    Course

    The Caveman Triathlon course

Everything happens at the Flower Mound Community Activity Center at 1200 Gerault Road, which hosts transition, the finish and the indoor swim. The 275-yard swim is in the CAC natatorium with a time-trial start, so athletes enter the pool one after another rather than in a mass start.

    Read the full course notes

The 11.5-mile bike is a relatively flat course of three loops, and the 5K run is on a flat route shared with the stand-alone Caveman 5K Run/Walk. Transition opens at 5:45 a.m., the triathlon starts at 7:00 and the 5K at 7:15. It makes an ideal first triathlon or early-season tune-up in North Texas.

    Race-day conditions
The swim is indoors, so water temperature and wetsuits are not a factor. Early April mornings in the Dallas–Fort Worth area usually start in the mid 50s °F and warm toward the mid 70s by midday, often with a stiff breeze and a chance of spring thunderstorms. The race can delay the start by up to an hour for bad weather, so bring layers for transition.

    What to train for

With a short pool swim, the race is decided on the bike and run: build to rides of 15 to 20 miles with two or three efforts of 8 to 10 minutes at race effort, and do a weekly brick of 30 to 45 minutes of riding straight into a 15 to 20 minute run.

Practise swimming 300 yards continuously at a steady effort and rehearse the move from pool deck to bike, including a quick change with wet feet.

Ride loops of about 3.8 miles in training so three laps feel familiar and you can pace them evenly.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Caveman Triathlon

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 4, 2027, your taper starts around March 26, 2027.

    Caveman Triathlon training questions

How long should I train for the Caveman Triathlon?

Most athletes give a sprint triathlon eight to twelve weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The coach counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.

What is the Caveman Triathlon course like?

Flat. Everything happens at the Flower Mound Community Activity Center at 1200 Gerault Road, which hosts transition, the finish and the indoor swim.

How cold is the water at the Caveman Triathlon?

The swim is indoors, so water temperature and wetsuits are not a factor. Early April mornings in the Dallas–Fort Worth area usually start in the mid 50s °F and warm toward the mid 70s by midday, often with a stiff breeze and a chance of spring thunderstorms. The race can delay the start by up to an hour for bad weather, so bring layers for transition.

When should I start tapering for the Caveman Triathlon?

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 4, 2027, your taper starts around March 26, 2027.
