Course
The Baden-Marathon course
The marathon and half marathon start at the Europahalle and finish inside the Carl-Kaufmann-Stadion, with the Runners Heaven recovery area straight after the line. The first lap heads through the city along the Kriegsstraße and the Ostring to Durlach, the old residence town of the margraves, then back through the Citypark Ost, past the Marktplatz with its pyramid and round Karlsruhe Palace at km 16 before Beiertheim and the Günther-Klotz-Anlage.

At the marathon split near km 20.5, half marathoners head for the stadium while marathoners turn onto a second loop through Bulach, Weiherfeld, Rüppurr and the Oberwald forest around km 31 to 32. Shortly before km 33 the course rejoins the first lap, so the last 8 km or so repeat the lively city-centre section, palace included at km 37. The organisers call it flat and fast, and the course is measured to German athletics federation (DLV) rules.

- Weather on race day
- Mid-September in Karlsruhe usually means a cool morning of around 11–15 °C and an average afternoon high of about 22 °C, with rain on only a handful of days. Late-summer sunshine on open city streets is the main thing to respect in the second half of a marathon, so start conservatively and drink at the early aid stations before you feel thirsty.
What to train for
A flat course rewards steady, even pacing, so most of your preparation should be at or around goal pace rather than on hills.
Build marathon long runs to 30–35 km with blocks of 8 to 12 km at goal pace, and arrive at the km 20.5 split in training runs feeling relaxed, not working.
The second loop through Rüppurr and the Oberwald is quieter than the city, so practise holding pace on your own in the back half of long runs. Half marathoners can sharpen with 5 x 2 km at half marathon pace or slightly faster, and marathoners aiming slower than 3:45 can bring a friend as a pacing angel for the last 4 km.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Baden-Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on September 19, 2027, your taper starts around September 1, 2027.

Baden-Marathon training questions
How long should I train for the Baden-Marathon?
Most runners give a marathon sixteen to twenty weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.
Is the Baden-Marathon course hilly?
Flat. The marathon and half marathon start at the Europahalle and finish inside the Carl-Kaufmann-Stadion, with the Runners Heaven recovery area straight after the line.
What is the weather usually like at the Baden-Marathon?
Mid-September in Karlsruhe usually means a cool morning of around 11–15 °C and an average afternoon high of about 22 °C, with rain on only a handful of days. Late-summer sunshine on open city streets is the main thing to respect in the second half of a marathon, so start conservatively and drink at the early aid stations before you feel thirsty.
When should I start tapering for the Baden-Marathon?
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on September 19, 2027, your taper starts around September 1, 2027.
Do I need an account to get a Baden-Marathon training plan?
No. The plan above builds in your browser with no account, no email, and no card. Make a free account only if you want to keep it, log your runs against it, and have the coach keep adapting it as your training goes.
