    The Zoom RedHawk Triathlon course

The Zoom RedHawk Triathlon & Multisport Festival is held at the beach in Hueston Woods State Park near Oxford and College Corner, with the start and finish on the beachfront east of the park office. Follow the beach signs on Main Loop Road, since the street address does not lead straight to the beach.

Triathlon options are Beginner (250 meters, 8 miles, 1.5 miles), Sprint (750 meters, 14 miles, 5K), Olympic (1,500 meters, 28 miles, 10K) and 1/3 Iron (2,000 meters, 42 miles, 9.3 miles), plus duathlons, aquabikes, aquathlons, open-water swims and open runs. High school and collegiate athletes start in the first wave, and the venue also hosts the Mideast Collegiate Triathlon Conference race. In 2026 the race was on September 13 with a 7:00 am first start, and the 2027 date has not been announced yet.

    Olympic, Sprint, 1/3 Iron, Beginner
    Race-day conditions
Ten years of mid-September weather data for Hueston Woods show average highs near 79 °F and lows near 60 °F, with about 62 °F at 8 am. Mornings are cool and humid and the day warms quickly, with rain on about one day in four or five in this window. Bring a warm layer for setup and plan your fluids for a warm run.

    What to train for

A September race lets you use the whole summer: build steady bike volume through July and August and sharpen with race-pace intervals in the last four weeks.

For the Olympic, ride at least 30 miles in your longest sessions, and for the 1/3 Iron build to 45 to 50 miles.

Run 15 to 30 minutes off the bike every week in the final six weeks. Practise open-water swims with a crowd if you can, because the first wave can be fast with collegiate athletes in it.

    Taper

Tapering for the Zoom RedHawk Triathlon

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar.
