    Course

    The Dayton Triathlon course

The swim uses a 750 m clockwise loop: once for the sprint, twice for the Olympic, and a 500 m half lap plus two loops for the 2,000 m 1/3 Iron, while beginners swim 300 m down the beach. The bike is a 13-mile counter-clockwise loop ridden once for the sprint, twice for the Olympic's 27 miles and three times for the 1/3 Iron's 40 miles, with an 8-mile out-and-back for beginners. The run is a 5K out-and-back repeated once, twice or three times (up to 9.3 miles), plus a 1.5-mile course for beginners.

    Race-day conditions
Late June in the Springfield area is warm summer weather. Climate normals for 1991 to 2020 give a June average high of about 81 °F and a low of about 59 °F. The average June dew point is about 61 °F, which feels noticeably humid, so hydrate well on the bike. June brings about 4.5 inches of rain, so pack something warm and dry for after the finish in case a shower passes through.

    What to train for

Pick the distance that fits your season: the beginner and sprint races are a friendly first triathlon, and the 1/3 Iron is a great step toward a 70.3.

Because the bike and run are laps, practise pacing so each loop feels as smooth as the first.

Add a weekly brick, and for the 1/3 Iron build long rides to 40 miles with a 30 to 45 minute run straight after. Swim at least a few sessions in open water, sighting on buoys, so the clockwise loop feels comfortable.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Dayton Triathlon

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar.
