Course
The Deer Creek Triathlon course
Everything starts from the beach at Deer Creek State Park near Mount Sterling, south of Columbus. The Olympic swims two laps of a 1,500 m counter-clockwise rectangle, the sprint swims one 750 m lap, and the super sprint swims 250 yards out and back along the beach in water that averages 4 to 6 feet deep.

The bike heads into the gently rolling countryside around the park: one 21 km loop for the sprint, two laps for the Olympic's 41 km and 7 miles for the super sprint. Every run is an out-and-back inside the park: 10 km in two laps for the Olympic, 5 km for the sprint and 2 miles for the super sprint. Duathlon and aquabike versions run alongside the triathlons, so there is a start line for nearly everyone.

- Race-day conditions
- Early June in central Ohio is warm. Climate data for Mount Sterling give a June average high of about 82 °F and a low of about 60 °F, with a dew point near 61 °F, which feels noticeably humid. June is also one of the wetter months, with about 4.5 inches of rain, so pack for a possible shower. Wetsuits are allowed up to 78 °F; from 78.1 to 83.9 °F they are allowed but make you ineligible for awards, and from 84 °F they are not permitted.
What to train for
The bike rolls rather than climbs, so practise holding a steady effort over short rises instead of attacking each one.
Get a few open-water swims in before June, ideally sighting on buoys around a rectangle so the turns feel natural.
Add a weekly brick of 45 to 60 minutes on the bike straight into a 15 to 20 minute run, since every run here comes right off the bike. Keep some run-bike-run sessions in your plan as well: in 2026 high water turned the event into a duathlon, and being ready for either format lets you race with confidence whatever the lake does.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Deer Creek Triathlon
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on June 6, 2027, your taper starts around May 28, 2027.
