Course
The Huntington Sprint Triathlon course
Everything starts and ends at Huntington Beach on Lake Erie, inside Cleveland Metroparks Huntington Reservation in Bay Village, with transition and the finish south of Lake Road near the Huntington Playhouse. The 750-meter swim (about 820 yards) starts west of the stair access to the Noshery, follows buoys at the turns and exits at the Huntington Beach Paddling Access, with rolling start waves from 6:30 AM.

The 13.1-mile bike rolls through Bay Village and Avon Lake on public roads that stay open to traffic, using bike lanes in several sections, via Wolf Road, Bradley Road, Walker Road, Lear Road, Electric Boulevard, Curtis Drive and Lake Road before turning back into the reservation. The 3-mile run follows sidewalks, the All Purpose Trail and Porter Creek Trail, passes Bay High School and turns around before Firestation Road, so you pass the aid station near the football field twice.

- Race-day conditions
- Late June in this stretch of the Lake Erie shore averages highs near 80 °F and lows around 63 °F, so the 6:30 AM start is usually comfortable and warms up through the run. The lake reaches about 68 °F by the end of June, which keeps wetsuits legal under the race rules (permitted up to 78 °F, optional without age group awards from 78.1 to 83.9 °F). About one day in three brings some rain and close to a third of late June days feel muggy, so drink steadily on the bike. Expect a light west breeze around 9 mph and sunrise just before 6 AM. Grit Races tests water quality with the Northeast Ohio Sewer District in the week before the race, and if the swim is canceled the event runs as a duathlon.
What to train for
This is a true sprint, so build speed on top of steady aerobic work: two or three swims, rides and runs a week is plenty for a strong first or fastest finish.
Get into open water before race day and practice sighting every six to eight strokes, because Lake Erie can have chop and the course is marked by buoys rather than lane lines.
Ride on open roads in training, holding a straight line in bike lanes and practicing smooth turns, since the bike course is not closed to traffic. Finish with a weekly brick of 30 to 40 minutes on the bike straight into 10 to 15 minutes running at goal effort, including a quick U-turn like the one on the run course.
