The Sylvania Triathlon course
Billed as one of the oldest multisport events in the country, the Sylvania Triathlon is based at the Tam-O-Shanter Sports Complex and Olander Park, with the swim starting from Olander Beach on Olander Lake. The Olympic covers a 1,500 m swim, a 24.6-mile bike and a 6.2-mile run, and the Sprint a 400 m swim, a 12.45-mile bike and a 3.1-mile run.

Each race opens with a mass elite start followed by a self-seeded time-trial start, Olympic first at 7:30 am and Sprint at 8:30 am. The 5K run has one water stop and the 10K adds a second, and more than 300 volunteers look after athletes along the way.

- Race-day conditions
- The organizers list average race-day air temperatures of 67 to 83 °F and an average water temperature of 81 °F, and Toledo in early August averages highs near 82 °F with about a 40% chance of muggy air. Under the USAT rules on the athlete guide, wetsuits are fine at or below 78 °F, optional without award eligibility between 78 and 84 °F, and not allowed at 84 °F or above, so a sleeveless swimskin or plain tri suit is the likely choice. Start hydrating the day before and plan to drink early on the bike.
What to train for
With a time-trial start you choose your spot, so learn your realistic swim pace in open water and seed yourself honestly for a calm first few minutes.
The bike is the longest part of either race, so build steady rides of 60 to 90 minutes for the Olympic (45 to 60 for the Sprint) with blocks at goal effort.
Since the run has only one or two water stops, practise drinking on the bike and add weekly bricks running 10 to 20 minutes straight off the bike. Headphones are not allowed on course, so get used to training without music on some key sessions.

Taper
Tapering for the Sylvania Triathlon
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar.

How long should I train for the Sylvania Triathlon?
Most athletes give a Olympic-distance triathlon twelve to sixteen weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The coach counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.
