Course
The Rocktoberfest course
Both races start and finish near the Winthrop Coliseum in Rock Hill, with the 10K going off at 8:00 a.m. The loop winds around Winthrop Lake, alongside the rolling greens of the Winthrop Golf Course and past Winthrop University's disc golf course, which hosts national-level competitions.

The 5K is one loop and the 10K is two, so you learn the course on lap one and friends and family get several chances to cheer. Most of the route is smooth running surface, with about 0.75 mile on gravel road, and there is one water stop per loop. A live rock band plays at the start and finish, and an Oktoberfest beer garden waits afterward.

- Weather on race day
- Late October mornings in Rock Hill are usually cool and dry, around 45–58 °F at the 8:00 a.m. start, with afternoon highs near 70 °F. That is good weather for a fast 10K: race in light gear, keep a layer for the start and the beer garden, and remember there are only two water stops in the 10K.
What to train for
The two-loop 10K rewards even pacing: run lap one at goal pace and use what you learned about the course to press on lap two.
Build to a weekly session of 4 to 5 x 1 mile at 10K pace with 2 minutes of easy jogging, plus a 20 to 25 minute tempo run.
Run on gravel or packed dirt now and then so the 0.75-mile gravel stretch does not break your rhythm. With only one water stop per loop, start the race well hydrated and practice running 45 to 60 minutes with just one drink.
Sample week
A sample Rocktoberfest training week
A week from the middle of the build, about six weeks out. Your plan sets the real distances and paces from your own fitness and adjusts them every week as you train.
- Monday
- Rest, or 20 minutes of mobility
- Tuesday Key session
- Intervals: 6 × 800 m at 5K to 10K effort, easy jog between
- Wednesday
- Easy run, 5 mi
- Thursday Key session
- Tempo run on a rolling route, 5 mi with 2 mi comfortably hard
- Friday
- Recovery run, 3 mi, or cross-train
- Saturday Key session
- Long run, 7–8 mi easy
- Sunday
- Easy run, 3 mi, then 6 relaxed strides
Taper
Tapering for the Rocktoberfest
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week.
