Course
The Spinx Run Fest course
All four races start on Main Street next to Fluor Field, the downtown ballpark, and finish at the stadium. The marathon heads north out of downtown on the Swamp Rabbit Trail, past Furman University toward Travelers Rest, then turns and comes back the same way; the half follows the same trail north toward Furman before turning for home.

The official marathon profile starts near 980 feet, dips to about 930 feet in the first mile and stays almost level to mile 6.5, then rises gently to roughly 1,100 feet by mile 9 and rolls between about 1,050 and 1,140 feet until mile 17. From there it drops steadily to mile 19 and runs level until the last half mile, which climbs about 60 feet back up to Fluor Field; the half stays between roughly 930 and 990 feet with the same short rise at the end. The trail stays open to the public and later starters will meet runners coming the other way, so keep right; the marathon is USATF certified and a Boston qualifier.

- Weather on race day
- Late October in Greenville usually brings a cool start, around 48–58 °F at the 7:00 a.m. marathon gun, with average afternoon highs near 73 °F. Rain falls on about seven days in a typical October, so a dry morning is likely but not guaranteed. Start in a throwaway layer and expect it to warm up noticeably over the second half of the marathon.
What to train for
The marathon's work is the gentle rise from mile 6.5 to mile 9 and the rolling stretch to mile 17, followed by a descent you can use.
Put 3 to 5 miles of steady climbing in the middle of your long runs, then practice settling straight back to goal pace on flat and downhill ground.
Most of the course is a paved greenway, so run long on a similar trail and get used to holding your line on the right among other runners. Save something for the short climb into Fluor Field: finish key long runs with 2 to 3 minutes uphill at strong effort.

Taper
Tapering for the Spinx Run Fest
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week.

Spinx Run Fest training questions
How long should I train for the Spinx Run Fest?
