Course
The Kiawah Island Marathon course
Both races start at 8:00 a.m. from the West Beach Conference Center in West Beach Village, near Kiawah Beach Drive and Shipwatch Drive, and finish right beside it. The route winds through the island community past maritime forest, salt marsh views, live oaks and grand homes, mostly inside the private resort, on roads such as Kiawah Beach Drive, Governors Drive, Kiawah Island Parkway and Ocean Course Drive.

Some roads stay open to cars, so keep to the course as marshals direct. Aid stations come every 2 to 3 miles, 15 on the marathon and 7 on the half, with water and Gatorade. Both courses are USATF certified, the marathon is a Boston qualifier, and 2026 is the 48th running, with a 6.5-hour limit and pacers from 3:25 to 5:00 in the marathon.
- Distances
- Marathon, Half marathon
- Weather on race day
- The organizers say December temperatures here average about 40–60 °F, and with an 8:00 a.m. start you will usually run in cool, comfortable air. Coastal wind off the marsh and ocean is possible, and the race goes ahead rain or shine, so bring a throwaway layer and gloves for the shuttle and the start.
What to train for
Cool weather and a calm island setting make this a good day for a goal time, so make even pacing the priority: build long runs to 18 to 20 miles with the last 6 to 8 at marathon pace.
With aid every 2 to 3 miles rather than every mile, practice carrying a gel or two and taking them on schedule, roughly every 30 to 40 minutes.
Add a weekly tempo of 4 to 6 miles at half marathon effort, and on windy days run your faster segments by effort rather than by the watch. If you are joining a pace group, train at that group's pace on your long runs so race morning feels routine.
