The Peachtree Road Race course

The largest 10K in the world, run every Fourth of July from Lenox Square in Buckhead down Peachtree Road, onto 10th Street in Midtown, and into Piedmont Park. Net downhill overall, but the climb up Cardiac Hill past Piedmont Hospital around the halfway mark is what everyone remembers. Around 50,000 runners start it.

Weather on race day

Atlanta in July. Hot and humid at the start and getting worse, which is the defining feature of the race.

What to train for

Heat acclimation and a single sustained climb. Do your hill work in the afternoon heat rather than at dawn, and set a goal that reflects July conditions.
