    Course

The Early Bird Turkey Trot course

Five Star NTP's Saturday-before-Thanksgiving trot starts and finishes at 200 Chastain Meadows Court in Kennesaw, with every distance starting together at 8:00 a.m. The course is a 3.1-mile loop: the 5K runs it once, the 10K twice, the 15K three times, and the half marathon four times plus a short extra section.

The organisers call it flat, with the honest caveat that nothing in North Georgia is completely flat, so expect a few gentle rises each lap. Self-serve water stations sit roughly every 1.5 miles, and finishers need to hold at least a 16-minute mile. Runners who crossed a Five Star finish line during the year earn a free 5K entry, which gives the morning a friendly, community feel.

    Weather on race day
Late November mornings in Kennesaw are usually cold and often clear, around 35–50 °F at the 8:00 a.m. start, warming toward the upper 50s °F by midday. Start in a throwaway layer and gloves, and since water is self-serve, carry a small bottle or plan your sips at the stations each lap.

    What to train for

A looped course rewards even pacing and mental discipline: in training, run your goal-pace work on a short repeated loop so laps three and four feel familiar.

Half marathoners should build to 11 to 12 mile long runs with the last 3 at goal pace, and 10K and 15K runners can add 4 to 5 x 1 mile at race pace.

Once a week add 6 x 45 to 60 seconds up a gentle hill to handle the small rises without losing rhythm. Note your lap splits and aim to make the last lap your fastest.

    Taper

Tapering for the Early Bird Turkey Trot

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.
