    Course

The Get Basted Turkey Trot course

Five Star NTP's "second helpings" turkey trot runs the Sunday before Thanksgiving from North Forsyth Middle School on Coal Mountain Drive in Cumming, with all distances starting together at 8:00 a.m. Everything is built on one 3.1-mile loop: the 5K runs it once, the 10K twice, the 15K three times and the half marathon four times plus a short extra section.

The organisers describe the course as fairly flat, with the gentle rises you expect in North Georgia. Self-serve water stations are roughly every 1.5 miles, finishers need to hold at least a 16-minute mile, and the field is capped at 500, so the loops never feel crowded.

    Weather on race day
Late November mornings in Forsyth County are usually cold and often clear, around 33–48 °F at the 8:00 a.m. start, with highs in the mid to upper 50s °F. Start in a throwaway layer and gloves, and with self-serve water, plan to drink at the stations on each lap or carry a small bottle.

    What to train for

On a repeated loop, pacing discipline wins: practise goal-pace runs on a short loop near home so the later laps feel routine, and note each lap split to keep them even.

Half marathoners should build to 11 to 12 mile long runs with the final 3 at goal pace, while 10K and 15K runners can add 3 to 4 x 1.5 miles at race pace.

Once a week, add 6 to 8 x 45 seconds up a gentle hill so the small North Georgia rises do not break your rhythm. Aim to make your last lap your fastest.

    Taper

Tapering for the Get Basted Turkey Trot

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.
