Course
The Maumee Bay Triathlon course
The race is based at Maumee Bay State Park near Toledo, where the land meets Lake Erie. Triathletes swim in a small man-made lake beside Maumee Bay: the Super Sprint is a 250-yard out-and-back along the beach in 4 to 6 feet of water, the Sprint a counter-clockwise 750 m rectangle and the Olympic two laps of the same shape for 1,500 m.
Read the full course notes
The bike uses loop courses on the country roads around the park, very flat with some gently rolling countryside: 8 miles for the Super Sprint, 21 km (about 13 miles) for the Sprint and 40 km (about 24.8 miles) for the Olympic. The run stays inside the park and finishes with a lap around the lake, 2 miles, 5 km or 10 km depending on your distance.

- Race-day conditions
- Around June 20 the Toledo area averages highs near 81 °F and lows near 62 °F, with about a 34% chance of a wet day and roughly a 25% chance of muggy air. Wetsuits are allowed at 78 °F or below; from 78.1 to 83.9 °F you can wear one but race in a separate Wetsuit category without awards, and at 84 °F or above they are not permitted. The official water temperature is taken 60 to 90 minutes before the start, so pack your wetsuit and decide on race morning, and drink well in the heat of the run.
What to train for
On a flat course the bike is all about holding a steady effort, so practise long stretches on your aero bars, such as 3 x 12 minutes at race effort with short easy spins between.
A two-lap rectangular swim means several turns, so rehearse sighting and buoy turns in open water before race day.
Weekly bricks of 40 to 60 minutes riding straight into 10 to 20 minutes running at goal pace will make the flat run feel smooth. Newer athletes have a friendly first step in the Super Sprint, a great way to learn the sport.

Taper
Tapering for the Maumee Bay Triathlon
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on June 20, 2027, your taper starts around June 11, 2027.
