Course
The Maratón León course
The 42K, 21K and 10K all start and finish on the Explanada Bicentenario at the León fairgrounds (Feria de León, in the Distrito León MX area), with the gun at 6:00 a.m. The routes follow the city's main avenues and are certified by AIMS and World Athletics, so marathon times count for Boston qualifying.

The profile barely changes, staying between about 1,791 and 1,822 m above sea level, but that is genuine altitude and every kilometre is run in thinner air. Water and Gatorade alternate every 2.5 km, and the marathon has a 6-hour limit with a sweeper bus moving at 8:30 per kilometre. The family 5K is held on the Saturday before.

- Weather on race day
- September is one of León's wetter months, with showers on about 12 days, but mornings are cool: the 6:00 a.m. start usually sits close to the average overnight low of about 15 °C, and afternoons reach around 27 °C. The cool air is a gift for the first half, but at 1,800 m you lose fluid faster and the sun gets strong by mid-morning, so drink at the 2.5 km stations from the start.
What to train for
Altitude, not hills, is the challenge in León.
If you live near sea level, plan a goal pace 10 to 20 seconds per kilometre slower than your flat sea-level target, run the first half by effort, and arrive a few days early if you can.
Because the course barely rises or falls, steady work translates directly: build long runs to 30–35 km with the last 10 km at goal pace, and add a weekly tempo such as 3 x 15 minutes at half marathon effort. Rehearse the 6:00 a.m. start and your breakfast timing on long-run days.
Sample week
A sample Maratón León training week

- Wednesday
- Easy run, 10–11 km
- Thursday Key session
- Goal-pace run, 16 km with 10 km at race pace
- Friday
- Recovery run, 6 km, or cross-train
- Saturday Key session
- Long run, 26–29 km, the last 6 km at race pace
- Sunday
- Easy run, 6 km, then 6 relaxed strides
Taper
Tapering for the Maratón León
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.

Maratón León training questions
How long should I train for the Maratón León?
Most runners give a marathon sixteen to twenty weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.
