    Course

    The Querétaro Marathon course

Start and finish are on Avenida Constituyentes opposite the Alameda Hidalgo, with a 6:00 start. The marathon first heads east past the Estadio Olímpico and north along Bernardo Quintana beside the end of the city's famous aqueduct, then returns west on Avenida Universidad past the Cerro de las Campanas.

From about km 20 it runs out along Constituyentes to El Pueblito in Corregidora, passing its pre-Hispanic pyramid, before turning on the Libramiento Sur Poniente and heading back to the centre. The official profile stays between about 1,805 and 1,869 m: the high point and nearly all of the climbing come in the first 12 km, and the second half is close to flat.

    Weather on race day
Early October in Querétaro is the tail of the rainy season: the 6:00 start is usually around 11–15 °C, and the day warms to about 25 °C. Showers are possible but usually lighter than in summer, and the sun gets strong after 9:00, so the second half of the marathon is the warmest part.

    What to train for

Front-load your strength: the first 12 km hold nearly all the climbing, so include rolling long runs and a weekly session of 6–8 x 2–3 minutes uphill at 10K effort.

Then train the flat second half with long runs that finish with 8–12 km at goal pace.

At about 1,800 m, visitors from sea level should pace by effort rather than the watch, and arrive a few days early if they can.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Querétaro Marathon

Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week.
