Course
The Flight 2 Freedom course
Everything starts at the beach at Barkcamp State Park near Belmont, in the wooded sandstone hills of eastern Ohio. Kayakers go first at 8:00 a.m. with a 1,500-meter paddle (bring your own kayak, paddle and life jacket), and swimmers follow at 8:15 a.m. with a 500-meter swim, both in a time-trial start of two athletes at a time.

The 8-mile bike leg runs on hard-packed park trail with some climbing and can be muddy, so a mountain or trail bike is required rather than a road bike. You finish with a 5K trail run through the park's forest. Two- and three-person relays are welcome, and the race supports the Underground Railroad Museum in nearby Flushing, a fitting cause for a course built around the idea of a journey to freedom.

- Race-day conditions
- Late August mornings in eastern Ohio's hill country are usually mild, around 58–68 °F at the start, warming into the low or mid 80s by midday with plenty of humidity. The race page does not publish a water temperature or wetsuit rule, and small Ohio lakes in late August are often close to or above 78 °F (the USA Triathlon wetsuit cutoff), so prepare to swim without one; goggles are fine, but flotation aids and fins are not allowed.
What to train for
Off-road handling matters more than raw speed here: ride your mountain or trail bike on local dirt trails once a week, including short punchy climbs and, if you can, a muddy section.
Swimmers should build to 500 meters of continuous open-water swimming with sighting every 6 to 8 strokes, while kayakers should paddle 1,500 meters at a steady effort and practice getting out onto the beach quickly.
Add a weekly brick of 30 to 45 minutes on the bike followed by a 15 to 20 minute trail run so your legs learn to handle uneven ground straight off the bike.

Taper
Tapering for the Flight 2 Freedom
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on August 21, 2027, your taper starts around August 12, 2027.
