    Course

    The Caesar Creek Triathlon course

HFP Racing's Caesar Creek Triathlon, Duathlon & Aquabike is held in Caesar Creek State Park, a 3,741-acre park near Waynesville, with the swim in Caesar Creek Lake. The Olympic is a 1,500-meter swim in two laps, a 40K bike on two loops and a 10K run on two laps, while the Sprint is 750 meters, 22K and 5K, and the Super Sprint is a 250-yard swim out and back along the beach in 4 to 6 feet of water, a 6.2-mile bike and a 2-mile run.

    Read the full course notes

The bike is a rolling course on mostly winding country roads around the park. The runs are out and back inside the park, and the final run includes a long gravel section across the old dam levee. Duathlon, aquabike and relay options are offered at most distances.

    Race-day conditions
The organizers list an average July lake temperature of about 77 °F and post the expected temperature 12 to 24 hours before the race. Under USA Triathlon rules wetsuits are allowed at 78 °F or below, allowed without awards eligibility from 78.1 to 83.9 °F, and not allowed at 84 °F or above. Ten years of mid-July weather data for the area show average highs near 85 °F and lows near 68 °F, with about 71 °F at 8 am and humid mornings. Expect a hot run, and drink on the bike before you feel thirsty.

    What to train for

The rolling bike rewards steady power over the rises, so include weekly rides with 4 to 6 short climbs at threshold effort and practise holding aero on the flats in between.

Train some of your runs on gravel or packed dirt so the levee section feels familiar.

Do weekly bricks in the final 6 weeks, running 15 to 30 minutes off the bike at goal effort. Because July water is warm and wetsuits may not be legal, practise swimming without one in open water.
