Course
The Sugar River Triathlon course
Everything happens at Belleville Community Park, a small-town venue south of Madison, and the race is round six of the seven-race Wisconsin Triathlon Series. The swim is a 400 m course in the calm water of Lake Belle View, a short and friendly open-water start.

The bike heads out for about 17 miles of rolling hills on the roads around Belleville (the organizer lengthened it from 16 miles after a construction detour, so check the latest map in race week). There is no single big climb, but the steady rollers reward riders who keep their cadence up and shift early. The 5K run finishes the day on a mix of gravel trail and quiet neighborhood streets, so expect slightly looser footing on part of the route.

- Race-day conditions
- Late August in south-central Wisconsin usually means 60–70 °F at the 7:30 a.m. start, warming toward 80 °F by late morning, often with some humidity. Water temperature decides the wetsuit rule on race morning: required below 58 °F, allowed up to 78 °F, allowed but not eligible for awards from 78.1 to 83.9 °F, and not allowed above 84 °F. A warm late-summer lake can land in that middle band, so be ready to swim without a wetsuit and drink well on the bike.
What to train for
With a short swim and a long ride for a sprint, this race is decided on the bike: build one ride a week to 20–25 miles on rolling roads and include 4–6 x 4 minutes at hard effort on the rises.
Practice brick runs straight off the bike (10–15 minutes at goal pace) so your legs adapt to the switch, and do at least one run a week on gravel or trail to get used to the looser footing.
Two or three open-water swims before race day, including one without a wetsuit, will make the 400 m feel calm and easy.

Taper
Tapering for the Sugar River Triathlon
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on August 22, 2027, your taper starts around August 13, 2027.
