    Course

    The Kewpee Triathlon course

The Kewpee Triathlon is based at Ottawa Metro Park in Lima, with a paved transition area inside the park and restrooms close by. The 500-yard swim is a single loop in the Lima Lake Reservoir.

The 15-mile bike is described by the organizer as a rolling, fast course on country roads laid out as one large rectangle, ideal for settling into a steady rhythm. The 5K run follows the river walk to the finish. Duathletes replace the swim with a 2-mile run, then ride the same 15 miles and finish on the same 5K.

    Race-day conditions
Early August in Lima usually means about 65–75 °F at the 8:00 a.m. start, rising toward the low 80s °F by late morning, often with humidity. The race does not publish a water temperature or wetsuit rule in advance, so check on race morning before you decide. Drink well on the bike, since the run comes during the warmest part of the morning.

    What to train for

The rectangle course rewards a steady time-trial effort: ride 2 x 15 minutes at a hard but sustainable pace once a week and build your longest ride to 20–25 miles.

Practice 500 yards of continuous swimming with sighting, ideally in open water at least twice before race day.

Add a weekly brick of 30–45 minutes on the bike straight into a 10–15 minute run. Duathletes should rehearse a relaxed 2-mile run into the bike, so there is still energy left for the final 5K.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Kewpee Triathlon

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on August 8, 2027, your taper starts around July 30, 2027.
