    Course

    The Monterrey 70.3 course

The 1.9 km swim is point-to-point in the Paseo Santa Lucía, a man-made canal through the city centre, with a rolling start at the Fuente de los Aretes and an exit beside the Museo de Historia Mexicana, a short run from transition on the Macroplaza. The 90 km bike is two laps on the express lanes of Avenida Constitución, almost flat, with the only climbing coming from a handful of overpasses.

The half marathon is two flat, paved laps fully closed to traffic, with aid stations every kilometre and a few stairs out of transition as the only real obstacle. You finish at the Macroplaza, one of the largest public squares in the world, with the Cerro de la Silla and the Sierra Madre on the skyline.

    Race-day conditions
IRONMAN lists an average water temperature of 21 °C, and recent editions have measured 21–26 °C, so whether wetsuits are allowed (legal up to 24.5 °C) is decided on race morning. Early March in Monterrey is usually dry, around 13–16 °C at the 6:50 start and mid-20s °C by the run, with the odd day above 30 °C. Train with and without a wetsuit, and plan your run hydration for warmth.

    What to train for

Flat roads on both bike and run mean no natural breaks: the job is to hold steady power and pace for the whole day.

Build long rides in the aero position with 2 × 30–40 minutes at goal 70.3 power, and practise braking and re-accelerating smoothly through the turnarounds at each end of the lap.

Make a weekly brick your anchor: 60–90 minutes on the bike, then 20–30 minutes at goal run pace. Swim some sessions without a wetsuit, since the canal can be too warm for neoprene.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Monterrey 70.3

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.

    Monterrey 70.3 training questions

How long should I train for the Monterrey 70.3?

Most athletes give a 70.3 triathlon sixteen to twenty weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The coach counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.

What is the Monterrey 70.3 course like?

Flat. The 1.9 km swim is point-to-point in the Paseo Santa Lucía, a man-made canal through the city centre, with a rolling start at the Fuente de los Aretes and an exit beside the Museo de Historia Mexicana, a short run from transition on the Macroplaza.
