Course
The Würzburg Marathon course
The WVV Marathon Würzburg starts and finishes on the Kranenkai beside the Main, next to the Congress Centrum Würzburg. The marathon runs two laps of a 21 km city loop that passes Würzburg's main sights and often follows the river directly, while the half marathon covers one lap.

The organizers describe the course as flat, fast and officially measured to DLV rules, and it is one of the few races in Germany recognized for Boston Marathon qualification. Bands line the loop, and the start goes off in four blocks between 9:10 and 9:25 based on your goal time.

- Weather on race day
- May in Würzburg averages highs around 18 °C and lows around 9 °C, so a late-May morning start usually feels cool and comfortable. Late May is also one of the wetter times of year, with roughly a one-in-three chance of rain on a given day, so pack a light layer or rain cape for the start blocks. Days are long, about 15.5 hours of daylight, and the sun can warm the second lap, so drink at the early stations too.
What to train for
A flat, measured course rewards even pacing, so build your long runs around steady blocks at goal marathon pace rather than surges.
Because the second lap repeats the first, practice mentally splitting the race in two: run the first lap relaxed and treat the second as the real race.
Full aid stations come every 5 km with water, isotonic drink and bananas, so rehearse taking fluids at that rhythm in training. Pacers run from 3:30 to 5:00 in the marathon and 1:45 to 2:30 in the half, a great help if your goal sits in that range. Keep the 5:30 maximum running time in mind if you are building toward your first marathon.

Taper
Tapering for the Würzburg Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on May 23, 2027, your taper starts around May 5, 2027.
