    Course

    The TC 10 Mile course

Starts in downtown Minneapolis at 400 Portland Avenue and finishes at the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul, sharing more than seven miles with the Twin Cities Marathon.

    Read the full course notes

The first three miles follow their own route before the course crosses the Mississippi River and joins the marathon on the river parkways. From the river it climbs up to Summit Avenue, the tree-lined boulevard of historic mansions that carries you east into St. Paul, before the finish opens up in front of the Capitol. Most of the race is flat or gently rolling, and the sustained rise up from the river is the one real hill. Fall color and big crowds along Summit Avenue make the closing miles memorable.

    Weather on race day
October mornings in the Twin Cities usually start in the 40s °F and reach the upper 50s °F (normals of about 41 °F and 58 °F), and from 2027 the race weekend moves to mid-October, which tends to run a little cooler. Crisp starts are common and the odd frosty one happens, so bring a throwaway layer and gloves. Cool air is ideal for a fast 10 miles.

    What to train for

The race rewards a strong second half: the climb from the river to Summit Avenue comes after you have settled into pace, and Summit then rewards anyone who can hold rhythm.

Do your weekly hill session on a long, gradual grade (4 to 6 x 3 minutes at 10-mile effort) rather than short, steep repeats.

Add a progressive long run of 11 to 13 miles that finishes with 3 miles at goal pace. In the first three miles, do not let the downtown energy pull you out too fast.

    Taper

Tapering for the TC 10 Mile

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week.

    TC 10 Mile training questions

How long should I train for the TC 10 Mile?

Most runners give a 10-mile twelve to fourteen weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.

Is the TC 10 Mile course hilly?

Rolling. Starts in downtown Minneapolis at 400 Portland Avenue and finishes at the Minnesota State Capitol in St.

What is the weather usually like at the TC 10 Mile?

October mornings in the Twin Cities usually start in the 40s °F and reach the upper 50s °F (normals of about 41 °F and 58 °F), and from 2027 the race weekend moves to mid-October, which tends to run a little cooler. When should I start tapering for the TC 10 Mile?

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week.
