    Course

    The Mankato Marathon course

The marathon, half marathon, relay and 10K start on Saturday morning near the All-Sports Dome on the Minnesota State University, Mankato campus and finish downtown near Warren Street and South 2nd Street, steps from the post-race party on South Front Street. The course is new for 2026, and the organizers bill it as scenic, faster and flatter.

Marathoners first wind through campus and the neighborhoods to the east, swing out along Victory Drive, then run south on Monks Avenue into open country on 195th Street before following the Red Jacket Trail through Red Jacket Valley Park and heading back into town on Old Highway 66. The marathon and half courses are USATF certified, the marathon is a Boston qualifier, and official timing runs for 6 hours 15 minutes. The 5K is its own Friday evening race, starting and finishing at 417 Poplar Street at 5:30 p.m.

    Weather on race day
Mid-October in Mankato usually means a cold start: normal lows are in the upper 30s °F and afternoon highs near 60 °F, so expect roughly 37–45 °F at the 7:20 a.m. marathon start. Wear a throwaway layer and gloves to the start, then enjoy near-ideal racing temperatures once you are moving.

    What to train for

The marathon has 15 aid stations with water and Gatorade, plus GU gels at miles 8.25 and 15.75, so rehearse taking gel and sports drink at those points on your long runs.

Pace groups run from 3:25 to 5:00 in the marathon and 1:35 to 2:30 in the half: pick yours early and do a weekly run of 6 to 10 miles at exactly that pace.

With a 7:20 a.m. start in fall air, do a few early-morning long runs in cool weather to dial in your warm-up and clothing. If you take on a Kato Challenge (Friday 5K plus a Saturday race), practice back-to-back days: an easy 3 miles with strides on Friday evening, then your long run on Saturday morning.
