Course
The Blue Ox Marathon course
Saturday's races start and finish at the Sanford Center on the shore of Lake Bemidji, and the organizers describe the routes as fairly flat. The USATF-certified marathon loops around Lake Bemidji and runs through downtown Bemidji on roughly half paved bike trail and half paved road, including narrow country roads open to traffic in the first half.

The 26K Lake Loop circles the entire lake from the Sanford Center (the distance can shift slightly with course needs), and half marathoners are bused about 3 miles up the Paul Bunyan Trail to start and run back to the Sanford Center on paved trail and road. The 5K and 10K run on Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. from the Sanford Center. Most of the course is partly shaded, with open stretches along the lakeshore, and the trails stay open to the public, so expect some company.

- Flat
- Distances
- Marathon, 26K, Half marathon, 10K, 5K
- Field
- The marathon is capped at 300 runners
- Weather on race day
- October normals for Bemidji (NOAA, 1981–2010) average lows around 32 °F and highs around 52 °F, so race morning is usually cold and frost is possible. Bring layers you can shed, gloves and a hat, and be ready for wind on the open stretches along the lakeshore.
What to train for
A flat, certified course with a small field rewards steady, even pacing, so make goal-pace running the heart of your plan.
Build to 18 to 20 mile long runs with the final 4 to 6 miles at marathon pace, and run a weekly tempo of 4 to 6 miles at threshold.
Do some long runs on cold mornings and practice drinking and opening gels with gloves on. The marathon cutoff is 6.5 hours (just under 15 minutes per mile), so run-walkers should rehearse that pace on their long runs.

Taper
Tapering for the Blue Ox Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on October 9, 2027, your taper starts around September 21, 2027.
