Course
The Trillium Triathlon course
Trillium is a USAT-sanctioned triathlon and duathlon for women of all ages and abilities, held in Sylvania since 2005. Transition and race-day packet pickup are at Centennial Terrace, and the triathlon swim starts from the steps of Centennial Quarry as a time trial, two athletes at a time.

The triathlon is a 400-meter swim, an 11-mile bike and a 3.1-mile run, with kayakers and lifeguards on the swim to guide you and offer a hand to rest on. Staff are posted on the bike course for mechanical help, drafting is not allowed, and the 5K run has one water stop with water and Gatorade. Relays for teams of three make it easy to race with friends.

- Race-day conditions
- Mid-July in Sylvania averages a high of 85 °F and a low of 63 °F, with a dew point around 62 °F that feels noticeably humid. The quarry water is warm: the organizers recorded 87 °F a few days before the 2026 race and note it is historically above the 78 °F wetsuit limit, so plan to swim without one. The 8:00 AM start keeps you ahead of the afternoon heat, but drink well on the bike and use the water stop on the run. July averages about 3.5 inches of rain, so pack a towel and a bag to keep your gear dry in transition.
What to train for
The 400-meter quarry swim is short, so focus on open-water sighting and a calm start rather than big swim volume.
Wetsuits are usually not allowed here, so do your open-water practice without one and race day will feel familiar.
Build toward the 11-mile bike with steady rides of 45 to 75 minutes, and add a weekly brick that goes straight into a 15 to 20 minute run. Rehearse your transition, since racks are first come, first served and your helmet goes on before you touch your bike. Eight to twelve consistent weeks of swim, bike and run are plenty to arrive confident at your first or fiftieth Trillium.

Taper
Tapering for the Trillium Triathlon
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar.

Trillium Triathlon training questions
How long should I train for the Trillium Triathlon?
Most athletes give a sprint triathlon eight to twelve weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The coach counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.
