Course
The Sarasota Triathlon course
Everything happens inside Nathan Benderson Park, a 600-acre park built around a 400-acre rowing lake. The swim is a beach start with counterclockwise loops (one for the Sprint, two for the Olympic), and the bike is a closed, pancake-flat loop on North Cattlemen Road and World Championship Drive (3 laps for the Sprint, 7 for the Olympic).

The bike is draft-legal for every distance, so riders can work in packs, but only road bikes are allowed: no aero bars, time trial bikes or disc wheels. The run is an out-and-back on the park trail and the Lakeside Path around the lake, turning at 1.7 miles for the Sprint and 3.28 miles for the Olympic. The Open distance (100 m swim, 3.8 mile bike, 1 mile run) is built for first-timers.

- Race-day conditions
- Sarasota in January usually means mornings around the low 50s °F warming into the 60s or low 70s °F, with dry, sunny days more common than rain. Under USA Triathlon rules wetsuits are allowed for age-groupers up to 78 °F, and January lake water usually sits well below that, so plan to swim in one and practice getting it off quickly. A cool morning on a fast, windy loop can chill you after the swim, so consider arm warmers for the bike.
What to train for
The draft-legal bike changes the race: practice riding close to a wheel in a group, cornering on the course's tight turns, and making hard surges to stay with a pack rather than holding steady power.
Train on a road bike with no aero bars, and do weekly group rides or interval sessions of 30 to 60 second surges with short recoveries.
The flat out-and-back run rewards a quick transition and even pacing, so add short bricks of 20 to 30 minutes on the bike straight into 2 to 3 miles at race pace. Most of your build falls over the holidays, so lock in your key sessions early.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Sarasota Triathlon
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on January 10, 2027, your taper starts around January 1, 2027.
