The race is held inside Fort De Soto Park, the island park at the mouth of Tampa Bay southwest of St. Petersburg, on a course closed to traffic during the event.
Read the full course notes
The sprint is a 0.5-mile open water swim, a 10-mile bike on the park roads and a 5K run, all at sea level with no hills at all. The start is at 7 a.m. and every rider must be off the roads by 9 a.m., when the Sheriff opens the park gates to the public. Wind off the Gulf and the bay is the main variable on a course this flat. The race is USA Triathlon sanctioned and timed by Florida Road Race Management.

- Race-day conditions
- Mid-April in St. Petersburg usually brings warm, humid mornings around 66–72°F, climbing toward the low 80s by late morning. Gulf water near the park usually sits around 72–77°F in April, so a wetsuit is often legal under USA Triathlon age-group rules (78°F and below), but the race-morning reading decides. Hydrate before the start and carry a bottle on the bike, because the run heats up fast in the Florida sun.
What to train for
A half-mile open water swim is the longest leg in time for many first-timers, so swim three times a week and include continuous 1,000-yard swims with sighting every 6–8 strokes.
The flat 10-mile bike rewards a steady, hard effort: try 3 × 8 minutes at a strong but steady pace with short recoveries.
Finish one ride a week with a 15-minute brick run to get used to the 5K on tired legs, and practise quick transitions, since every second counts on a short course.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Escape From Fort Desoto
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on April 10, 2027, your taper starts around April 1, 2027.
