Course
The Providence Rhode Races course
Every race starts and finishes at Bold Point Park in East Providence, with the marathon off at 7:30 a.m., the half at 8:00 and the 5K at 8:15. The marathon and half begin on the Linear Park bridge, wind through India Park and along the riverfront, and include an out-and-back on Blackstone Boulevard before crossing the Henderson Bridge on its new bike lanes and following Waterfront Drive.

The marathon then continues through East Providence, loops the Rhode Island Country Club in Barrington and returns on the East Bay Bike Path, while the half turns around sooner on the bike path. The organizers call the course mostly flat with some gradual elevation changes, and the marathon is USATF certified and a Boston qualifier. Roads stay open, so you run inside coned lanes, with aid about every 2 miles.

- Weather on race day
- Early May in Providence is usually cool and pleasant for running, with typical highs in the mid 60s °F and lows around 50 °F. A 7:30 a.m. start means you will likely begin in the 50s °F, so a throwaway layer helps at Bold Point Park. May sees about nine days with some rain, and early May is one of the calmer stretches of the year for wind. Muggy days are rare this early, but bring a cap and plan your fluids in case the sun comes out on the open bike path.
What to train for
A mostly flat, certified course is a real chance at a Boston qualifier or a personal best, so build your plan around marathon pace work: 6 to 10 miles at goal pace inside long runs of 16 to 20 miles.
The gradual rises, such as the climb onto the Henderson Bridge, reward a few weeks of easy hill repeats of 60 to 90 seconds.
Practice running a steady line on a bike path, since the long return on the East Bay Bike Path can feel narrow and quiet compared to the city sections. Half marathoners will do well with tempo runs of 4 to 6 miles and long runs up to 12 miles, and the 3.5 hour limit makes the half friendly to walkers too.

Taper
Tapering for the Providence Rhode Races
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on May 2, 2027, your taper starts around April 14, 2027.
