    Course

    The Prairie Fire Marathon course

The fall race starts on McLean Boulevard beside Equity Bank Park, the ballpark on the Arkansas River just west of downtown, and finishes inside the stadium along the third-base line. The route ties together Delano, downtown, the Design District, College Hill, the City of Eastborough, Rockwood, South and Central Riverside, with marathoners adding the river path and the Indian Hills neighborhood.

Expect a long stretch on Douglas Avenue, which is closed east as far as Towne East Drive, and a riverside run on McLean Boulevard, which is closed north to 15th Street. The organizers call it a flat, fast, Boston-qualifying urban course: the only real gradient is the gentle grade on East Douglas toward College Hill, and you get it back as a downhill on the return. Marathoners not at the split by 10:50 a.m. are directed to the half finish, and the course closes at 1:30 p.m. for the full (about a 6-hour pace) and 11:30 a.m. for the half.

    Weather on race day
Mid-October in Wichita usually ranges from the upper 40s to about 70 °F over the day, so the 7:10 a.m. start is often in the high 40s to 50s. The plains can be breezy and a warm year is possible (the organizers publish warm-weather and wind protocols), so dress for a cool start and ease off your goal pace if it climbs past 60 °F.

    What to train for

On a flat course the job is holding pace, so make goal-pace work the center of your plan: build to 18 to 20 mile long runs with 8 to 12 miles at marathon pace on flat roads or a river path.

Add a weekly tempo of 4 to 6 miles at half-marathon effort so steady running feels automatic.

Practice running into a headwind on breezy days, sharing the work in a group, since the long straights on Douglas and McLean can be exposed. Plan fueling around the aid stations (12 on the marathon course, six of them passed twice) and take a gel every 30 to 40 minutes.

    Taper

Tapering for the Prairie Fire Marathon

Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week.

    Prairie Fire Marathon training questions

How long should I train for the Prairie Fire Marathon?
