    Course

    The Parma Marathon course

Every race starts and finishes at the Parco della Cittadella on Via Passo Buole, and the marathon is a single FIDAL-certified loop that brings you back to the same point. The organizers describe a route through the heart of Parma, its streets, squares and best-known landmarks, and the shorter races branch off it: the VENTI4 turns into Via Garibaldi at km 3.5 instead of entering the Parco Ducale with the marathon and heads back to town at km 17, while the TRENTA2 follows the marathon and takes the return leg early at km 21.

    Read the full course notes

Total climbing is about 130 m over the full 42.2 km (well under 100 m on the VENTI4), so the profile is gentle throughout. The marathon starts at 9:15, the VENTI4 around 9:35, and the two 10 km races, the competitive Vigorosa on a FIDAL-certified course and the non-competitive Desmìla, go off together at 9:50.

    Weather on race day
Mid-October in Parma usually ranges from about 10 °C in the early morning to 18–19 °C in the afternoon, so the 9:15 start is often cool and comfortable. Damp air and showers are common (about nine rainy days in the month), and it warms through the late morning. Start a little conservatively and keep drinking, since marathoners finish in the warmest part of the day.

    What to train for

With only about 130 m of climbing on the loop, this is a course for steady, even pacing, so build long runs to 32–35 km with blocks at goal pace, for example 3 × 6 km in the second half.

Add threshold sessions such as 4 × 10 minutes to raise the pace you can hold comfortably, and include short pickups after corners, since a city loop has plenty of turns.

If you are running the TRENTA2, treat it as a marathon build with the longest runs trimmed to 26–28 km.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Parma Marathon

Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on October 17, 2027, your taper starts around September 29, 2027.

    Parma Marathon training questions

How long should I train for the Parma Marathon?

Most runners give a marathon sixteen to twenty weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.

Is the Parma Marathon course hilly?

Flat. Every race starts and finishes at the Parco della Cittadella on Via Passo Buole, and the marathon is a single FIDAL-certified loop that brings you back to the same point.

What is the weather usually like at the Parma Marathon?

Mid-October in Parma usually ranges from about 10 °C in the early morning to 18–19 °C in the afternoon, so the 9:15 start is often cool and comfortable. Damp air and showers are common (about nine rainy days in the month), and it warms through the late morning. Start a little conservatively and keep drinking, since marathoners finish in the warmest part of the day.

When should I start tapering for the Parma Marathon?

Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on October 17, 2027, your taper starts around September 29, 2027.
