Course
The Rome Marathon course
The start is on Via dei Fori Imperiali with the Colosseum at your back, and the finish is inside the Circo Massimo. In between, the route is a tour of the city: Piazza Venezia, the Palatine, the Basilica of San Paolo, the Pyramid of Cestius, the Lungotevere, Castel Sant'Angelo and Via della Conciliazione facing St Peter's.

The second half heads north to the Foro Italico, Ponte Milvio and the Auditorium, then comes back along the river to Piazza del Popolo, Piazza di Spagna and Piazza Navona before passing the Vittoriano and the Bocca della Verità in the last 2 km. Elevation barely changes, staying between about 8 and 31 m above sea level, but the historic centre brings stretches of sampietrini cobbles and plenty of tight corners.

- Field
- About 36,000 entries for the 2026 marathon
- Weather on race day
- Mid-March in Rome usually runs from about 6 °C at dawn to 16 °C in the afternoon, so the 8:30 start is cool and the second half warms up, especially in sunshine. Rain is possible on roughly one day in five, and wet sampietrini get slippery, so choose shoes with good grip.
What to train for
The profile is flat, but cobbles and frequent turns make even pacing harder than the elevation suggests.
Run part of your long runs on uneven surfaces such as gravel paths to build ankle and foot strength, and add calf and hip stability work twice a week.
Practise accelerating smoothly out of corners at marathon pace during tempo runs, and build long runs of 30–34 km with 15–20 km at goal pace so the last 10 km through the centre feel smooth.

Your build to race day
Taper
Tapering for the Rome Marathon
Start the taper two to three weeks before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on March 14, 2027, your taper starts around February 24, 2027.
