    Course

    The Shamrock Run course

The 49th edition is based in the Old First Ward, Buffalo's historic Irish neighborhood, around the Old First Ward Community Center on Republic Street and Father Conway Park. The 8K (4.97 miles) loops north past the Cobblestone District and the Exchange Street station toward Swan and Carroll Streets, then comes back south through the Ward and along the Buffalo River before finishing back in the neighborhood.

It is essentially flat, with plenty of corners on narrow residential streets, so the field stays tight in the early miles. Neighbors turn out along the blocks, and every in-person runner gets free entry to the post-race beer tent outside the community center. The race began with 200 runners paying $2 and has grown into one of the city's best-loved early-season traditions.

    Weather on race day
Early March in Buffalo is usually 25–40 °F at the 10 a.m. start, often with a raw wind off Lake Erie and a fair chance of snow or slush. Wear gloves and a hat you can stash, and race by effort if wind or footing slows you.

    What to train for

An 8K is short enough to race hard and long enough to punish a fast first mile, so practise even pacing with 4 to 5 x 1 mile at 8K to 10K pace with 2 minutes of jogging.

Add a weekly 20 to 25 minute tempo run and some strides to stay quick through the many corners.

Winter training here means cold and wind, so do some of your faster sessions outdoors rather than only on a treadmill.

    Taper

    Tapering for the Shamrock Run

Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on March 6, 2027, your taper starts around February 25, 2027.
