Course
The Syracuse Half course
The race starts and finishes downtown beside the War Memorial and the Oncenter on South State Street, with a 7:30 a.m. start. The first two miles loop south along State Street, Oakwood Avenue and Kennedy Street before the course swings north on Warren and Catherine Streets into the Northside.

The main climb comes between miles 4 and 6 on Lodi Street, Turtle Street and First North Street, rising about 60 feet, and then the route drops to the flattest, lowest stretch of the day past Destiny USA, the Onondaga Lake shoreline on Harborside Drive and the Inner Harbor (miles 7 to 10). The last real effort is a 50-foot rise around mile 11.5 over the Spencer Street bridge and up Lodi Street before the run back downtown, for about 325 feet of total climbing. The organisers note the 2027 route may still shift because of the I-81 project, so check the final map in race week.

- Weather on race day
- Late March in Syracuse is usually cold at a 7:30 a.m. start, somewhere between the mid-20s and low 40s °F, and a wet day with rain or late snow is common. Wind off Onondaga Lake can bite on the open miles 7 to 9, so start in a throwaway layer and gloves, and expect to want them back by the lakefront.
What to train for
This is a late-winter half, so most of your training happens in January and February: plan your long runs around the weather and do not be afraid to take a key session indoors.
Rehearse the shape of the course with long runs that include a sustained 60-foot climb around miles 4 to 6, then settle into goal pace on the flat for miles 7 to 10.
Add a weekly tempo of 4 to 6 miles at half marathon effort, and finish your last few long runs with a short hill in the final 2 miles to prepare for the Spencer Street rise at mile 11.5.

Taper
Tapering for the Syracuse Half
Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course rolls, so keep one short session on undulating ground in the first taper week. With the race on March 21, 2027, your taper starts around March 9, 2027.
