    Course

    The Mount Maunganui Half course

All three races start and finish outside the Mount Maunganui Surf Club on Adams Avenue, by Main Beach at the foot of Mauao. The organisers describe the route as easy running on a flat course with sealed road surfaces, and course maps for each distance, with toilets and aid stations marked, are on the official site.

Waves are self-seeded: the 5 km starts at 7:45 am, the 10 km at 8:00 and 8:05 am, and the half marathon in three waves from 8:20 am, with your time starting when you cross the mat. Aid stations on the half are at 3, 6, 9, 12, 14.5 and 18 km, with water and electrolyte from 6 km onward. Walkers are welcome in every distance, starting behind the runners and keeping left.

    Weather on race day
Late August is the tail end of winter in the Bay of Plenty: start temperatures are usually around 7–12 °C, with afternoon highs near 15 °C. Showers are fairly common and a sea breeze can pick up along the coast, so bring a throwaway layer for the start and expect cool, fast conditions once you are moving.

    What to train for

Flat, sealed roads and cool air reward rhythm and pacing discipline.

Build your long run to 18–21 km for the half with the final 5 to 8 km at goal pace, and include a weekly threshold session such as 4 x 2 km or 20 minutes continuous at a comfortably hard effort.

Because waves are self-seeded, practise starting relaxed: run the first 2 km of your long runs 10 to 15 seconds per km slower than goal pace, then settle in.

    Taper

Tapering for the Mount Maunganui Half

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp. The course is flat, so pacing decides the day: rehearse your goal pace in short segments during race week. With the race on August 28, 2027, your taper starts around August 16, 2027.

    Mount Maunganui Half training questions

How long should I train for the Mount Maunganui Half?

Most runners give a half marathon twelve to sixteen weeks of focused training on top of an existing base. The plan above counts back from your actual race date, so if you have less time than that it builds the best plan the remaining weeks allow rather than pretending you have longer.

Flat. All three races start and finish outside the Mount Maunganui Surf Club on Adams Avenue, by Main Beach at the foot of Mauao.

What is the weather usually like at the Mount Maunganui Half?

Late August is the tail end of winter in the Bay of Plenty: start temperatures are usually around 7–12 °C, with afternoon highs near 15 °C. Showers are fairly common and a sea breeze can pick up along the coast, so bring a throwaway layer for the start and expect cool, fast conditions once you are moving.

When should I start tapering for the Mount Maunganui Half?

Start the taper ten to fourteen days before race day. Cut your weekly volume by about a third, then by half in race week, and keep a few short efforts at race pace so your legs stay sharp.
