Course
The Taupō Marathon course
The marathon and half marathon start on Tongariro Street in central Taupō and finish at the Tongariro Domain by the Great Lake Centre. The half heads out to the airport roundabout, turns onto State Highway 1 to 5 Mile Bay, then comes home along the Great Lake Pathway, roughly 10 km of lakeside path with views across Lake Taupō to the snow-capped mountains, and both courses now include a loop through the new Ngāroto Estate subdivision.

The marathon runs two laps of this route, turning at Te Ātea before heading out again. No elevation profile is published, so expect gentle undulations on the road section and a flatter lakeside return; both courses are AIMS certified, marshalled and wheelchair friendly. The marathon starts at 7:45 am with a 4:00 pm finish cut-off, and the half starts at 9:10 am.

- Weather on race day
- Early August is mid-winter in Taupō: race mornings are usually cold, around 0–5 °C at the start, with afternoon highs near 12 °C and a fair chance of showers or frost. Start in gloves and a throwaway layer and warm up well. Once you settle in, the cool air is great for running fast, but keep drinking at the aid stations even if you do not feel thirsty.
What to train for
Cold air and a long lakeside run home make this a course for patient pacing.
Build long runs to 32–35 km for the marathon (18–20 km for the half), finishing the last 8 km at goal pace to rehearse the Great Lake Pathway stretch.
Add a weekly session of 5 x 2 km at threshold pace, and run some long runs early on cold mornings to learn what to wear and how to fuel. Marathoners should practise running past the start area and heading out for lap two, which takes more focus than it sounds.
