The Olympic race swims 1 mile on an out-and-back course in the calm salt water of Lake Montauk, rides 20 miles out and back on historic Montauk roads with some hills and views of the Montauk Lighthouse, and finishes with a 6.2 mile run with challenging hills through the scenic side of Montauk. The sprint covers a 0.5 mile swim, a 14 mile bike and a 3.4 mile run, and there is also an Olympic aquabike. Racing starts at 7:30 a.m., and the registration hub is the Montauk Harborside Resort Motel lot at 371 West Lake Drive. The bike has no water stops and no drafting, while the run has water every mile and no earbuds or music players.

- Race-day conditions
- Mid-June in Montauk averages a high near 71 °F and a low near 59 °F, so the 7:30 a.m. start is usually mild. The ocean around Montauk averages about 59 to 62 °F in mid-June, and the race notes spring water near 55 °F, so a wetsuit and a warm layer for before and after the swim are smart. There is roughly a 27% chance of a wet day, and winds average close to 9 mph, mostly from the west, which you may feel on the exposed bike stretches.
What to train for
Get comfortable in cold open water: the organizers put spring water near 55 °F and recommend wetsuits, so swim in yours several times and practice easing in with calm, steady breathing.
Because the bike has no water stops, train to carry and drink everything you need for 20 miles from your own bottles.
The run's challenging hills reward strength off the bike, so do weekly bricks that finish on a hilly loop, and include short hill repeats in your run week. A couple of out-and-back rehearsals will also help you practice clean turnarounds on the swim and the bike.

Taper
Tapering for the Mighty Montauk Triathlon
Start the taper seven to ten days before race day. Trim the volume in all three sports, keep short race-pace efforts in each, and do one last short brick so running off the bike still feels familiar. The course is hilly, so keep one short hill session in the first taper week to keep the climbs familiar. With the race on June 12, 2027, your taper starts around June 3, 2027.
